With members of Congress returning to Washington after the Fourth of July festivities in their home states and districts, technology seems to be the theme of the week ahead.
The House Committee on Energy and Commerce examines Internet Governance Progress After ICANN 53 – with a keen eye specifically on the transition of “key Internet functions from the United States to the multistakeholder community.” In late June, the House and Senate approved legislation ensuring congressional oversight over the transition.
Meanwhile, cyber crime and security are on the agenda on both sides of Capitol Hill. The Senate Judiciary Committee conducts a pair of hearings on Wednesday to examine “Modernizing our Legal Framework for the Information Age” and the “Encryption, Technology and the Balance Between Public Safety and Privacy.” The House Committee on Science, Space and Technology asks, “Is the OPM Data Breach the Tip of the Iceberg?”
Other topics covered by hearings and meetings in the week ahead include America’s long term fiscal picture, a review on Dodd-Frank, health care challenges and opportunities for small businesses, entrepreneurship training for veterans and the SBA disaster loan program.
