This Week in Entrepreneurship Policy: Apple vs. FBI

twiep techThe nationwide debate on privacy vs. security continues as Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon and other tech heavyweights are formally lining up behind Apple in its legal battle with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. That debate will play out in a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing this week featuring FBI Director James Comey and Bruce Sewell, senior vice president and general counsel for Apple.

That isn’t the only thing happening this week on Capitol Hill. Jason Furman, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors presents the Economic Report of the President to the Joint Economic Committee.

In the Senate, the Judiciary Committee looks to limit abuses of the EB-5 visas for immigrant investors. Meanwhile, the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee takes a look at Federal Communications Commission oversight and also examines the MOBILE NOW Act. The recently introduced legislation would increase the amount of spectrum in the hands of the private sector and accelerate the deployment of ultra-fast wireless connections.

In the House, the Small Business Committee tackles the first of two hearings on potential improvements to the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. The hearing will discuss the health of the two programs and suggest potential improvements to help boost commercialization rates, improve data collection and reporting, and limit paperwork burdens on the participating small firms.

Other topics covered by committee hearings this week include: wearable devices, mobile apps and health care, the state of the farm economy and more.
