This Week in Entrepreneurship Policy: Sharing Economy & Modernizing the Tax Code

The rise of sharing economy startups like TaskRabbit, Uber and Airbnb have not only changed how consumer buy services, but also how workers provide those services. This week, the House Small Business Committee holds a two-part hearing on how the tax code treats those workers and how it might be modernized. Witnesses from TaskRabbit and the IRS join tax policy and trade association voices.

Elsewhere in the House, the Energy & Commerce Committee picks up its ‘Disruptor Series’ of novel technologies and business models with a review of 17 pieces of legislation to help ensure that the Federal Trade Commission appropriately balances consumer protection with safeguarding innovations that may pose theoretical risks.

Also on the topic of disruption, the Joint Economic Committee considers “The Transformative Impact of Robots and Automation.” Other topics covered during this week include: SBA’s 7(a) loan program, cybersecurity, regulatory burdens and more.
