Resources for working with the KFS data
There are several resources online to help you in working with these data.
There is a document called "Study Metadata Documentation", which gives a variable list with the variable name, its label/description, and information such as the type of variable and format. It is a data dictionary/codebook. The direct link on SSRN is http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1024312.
There are also four annotated questionnaires, which contain the surveys themselves, as well as the associated variable names with each survey question. You can find these documents, in addition to many other documents that you might find helpful as well, by clicking on "Related Research (on SSRN)" from the main KFS page. The direct link is http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/JELJOUR_Results.cfm?form_name=journalBrowse&journal_id=1008679
Additionally, the Kauffman Foundation has sponsored a series of webinars which are available for researchers wanting to use the data:
