Social news website reddit touring Midwest to rally communities, share stories about Open Internet platform use
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Sept. 24, 2012) – Kansas City is one of several Midwest stops on the reddit 10-day "Internet 2012" campaign bus tour recently announced by the social news website.
The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation will host the tour's Kansas City visit from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 8. The event in support of the Open Internet platform is open to public, but attendees must RSVP online.
Following a complimentary dinner, reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian will lead a panel discussion featuring founders of some of Kansas City's most innovative Internet-based startups, including AgLocal, Neighbor.ly and Leap2.
Also on the panel will be Jay Rogers, founder and CEO of Arizona-based Local Motors, the world's first open-source automobile company.
Funded through a crowdsourced IndieGogo campaign, the bus tour kicks off Oct. 2 with an event in Denver in advance of the first Presidential debate and concludes Oct. 11 with an event at the Vice Presidential debate in Danville, Ky. As it stops in Midwestern communities, reddit will gather stories about the promise and power of the Open Internet from local startups, college students, politicians, grassroots organizations and more.
"People may wonder why the Internet needs a campaign," Ohanian said. "From taxes to health care to immigration, our political parties can't seem to agree on anything, but there's one issue that no one is really talking about – the Open Internet. Both sides should be championing it because what's at stake impacts every American and goes far deeper than any one region or industry."
Along its route, the reddit tour will host themed debates and meet-ups, feature local tech jobs, champion universal access to high-speed Internet, and showcase stories of individuals who are leveraging the Internet to start companies, learn new skills, earn extra income and improve quality of life.
