Kansas City Business Community Gears Up for Seventh Annual Global Entrepreneurship Week

Local events begin with Get in the Ring: The North American Startup Clash

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Nov. 3, 2014) — Kansas City's business community will celebrate the engine that drives economic growth with Global Entrepreneurship Week, an international open-source series of events that highlights the innovators and job creators who launch startups and bring ideas to life. The Kauffman Foundation founded GEW in 2007.

During the week of Nov. 17-23, local organizations throughout metropolitan Kansas City will host more than 60 events that offer education, networking and collaboration. The events give aspiring entrepreneurs and experienced businesspeople an opportunity to share in the spirit of entrepreneurship in Kansas City. A full schedule of events can be found here.

"GEW is one of the best weeks of the year in Kansas City," said Nathan Kurtz, a manager in Entrepreneurship at the Kauffman Foundation. "Kansas City has been an epicenter of GEW activity since the beginning. Last year, more than 100 local organizations hosted more than 60 events and an estimated 5,500 Kansas Citians participated."

Events will take place across Kansas City during the week. Among the featured events are:

GEW-KC will start a few days early with the North American finals of "Get in the Ring," a startup pitch competition hosted by the Kauffman Foundation. The boxing-themed event will feature eight entrepreneurs from up to three countries: Canada, Mexico and the United States. In 2013, Kansas City-based startup EyeVerify won the U.S. championship and took the international championship in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, less than a week later.

On Nov. 17, GEW-KC's kickoff event will include a rally and networking opportunity for entrepreneurs throughout the metro area. The event, held at Union Station, will offer a political convention flair, highlighting entrepreneurs from Eastern Jackson County, Wyandotte County, the Northland, Kansas City Startup Village and others as they show their spirit in creating businesses across the region.
