Bi-State Education Policy Institute: High-Quality Teaching

With a growing body of research demonstrating the positive effect of high-quality teachers on students' academic achievement, national experts on teacher quality discussed the broad range of efforts the Foundation supports. The research and programs funded are intended to refine what is known about teacher quality and improve practice so all students have access to high-quality teaching.

The research and programs discussed included New Teacher Center's Teacher Induction in Kansas City (PDF); National Council on Teacher Quality's State of Teacher Policy Yearbook ; Teach For America; Northwest Missouri State University's Residential Internship Program, and; UKanTeach.

Breakout sessions explored four questions, including:

1) What should policymakers and administrators do to improve the way we recruit, train, and retain teachers?

2) What policies are most likely to result in a teaching force that is highly effective in raising the achievement of all students?

3) How can we improve teacher quality to get the best teachers in the neediest schools and get dramatically better results?

4) What incentives are effective at attracting and retaining experienced and effective teachers and leaders to low-performing schools?
