Awesome People

The following entrepreneurs provide their expertise via videotape on many of the topics discussed in the Attracting and Retaining Awesome People program.

Ewing Marion Kauffman Ewing Marion Kauffman
Founder of Marion Laboratories, later Marion Merrell Dow
http://www.kauffman.org

Born in 1916, Ewing Marion Kauffman was an entrepreneur, baseball team owner and philanthropist who believed his success was the direct result of one fundamental philosophy: treat others as you would like to be treated. In living by this principle, Ewing Kauffman was a man who was beloved by his associates in the pharmaceutical company he founded and by those he touched through his creation of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and the Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership.

In 1950, Kauffman began working as a drug salesman only to have his territory cut when his commissions exceeded the company president's salary. Believing that was no way to treat a productive employee, he quit and founded Marion Laboratories Inc. With relentless hard work and entrepreneurial spirit, he built his company into a pharmaceutical giant. In 1989 Marion Laboratories merged with Merrell Dow.

Kauffman, along with his wife Muriel, purchased the Kansas City Royals as a major league baseball expansion franchise in 1968 with no prior experience in professional sports. Their motivation, Kauffman said, was simply to bring professional baseball to his well-deserving hometown.

Mr. Kauffman passed away in 1993, but his legacy lives on through the foundations he created.
