Al Strain is the Chief Financial Officer for the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. Strain joined the Foundation in 2010 to help assess a number of local programs designed to foster science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to determine how they could more effectively scale and become sustainable with additional community support. One result of his work was the formation of the KC STEM Alliance, a new entity affiliated with the UMKC School of Engineering that serves as an umbrella for FIRST Robotics, Project Lead the Way and other STEM-related efforts, streamlining operations and marketing efforts.
Prior to joining Kauffman, Strain was senior vice president and managing director for State Street—Kansas City, a financial services organization employing 1,500 people that provides accounting and administrative services for 3,000 investment portfolios. While at State Street, Strain also served as senior vice president with responsibility for areas including information technology, human resources, facilities management, and business and strategic planning. Previously, he was executive vice president and chief information officer for Investors Fiduciary Trust Company. Since 2009, he has been a teaching professor at UMKC's Bloch School of Business.
