This Week in Entrepreneurship Policy: Cyber-Preparedness & Encryption

twiep techFollowing a flurry of committee hearings on taxes and other issues leading up to Tax Day, things look a bit quieter on Capitol Hill in the week ahead. The Joint Economic Committee wraps up the tax discussion this Wednesday with a hearing titled, “Is Our Complex Code Too Taxing on the Economy?”

The House Small Business Committee addresses the lack of preparation by small businesses – and the federal government – in defending against and responding to cyber-attacks. Meanwhile, the House Energy and Commerce Committee examines the balance between strong encryption standards and its impact on law enforcement and intelligence communities – a debate shaped by the recent legal battle between Apple and the FBI (both of which will have witnesses at the hearing).

Two previously scheduled hearings were postponed, including a hearing about the impact of a Treasury Department proposal that, according to opponents, would have increased the cost to small businesses offering retirement plans to their employees.

Other topics covered include economic redevelopment of brownfields and small satellite opportunities and challenges in the commercial space launch industry.
