Grant Funding Guidelines

What we fund

The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation only funds programs within the United States. The majority of our grants are proactive and made to tax-exempt organizations. Most of our education grants and all of our civic-engagement grants go to organizations and efforts focused within Kansas City’s six-county metropolitan area (KS-Wyandotte, Johnson; MO-Cass, Clay, Platte and Jackson). Although we fund entrepreneurship programs and activities located across the country, a significant portion of our entrepreneurship is directed at Kansas City and regional efforts.

We appreciate being considered as a potential funder and contributor to your endeavors. Although the Foundation recognizes the importance of your request, regrettably, we are not able to provide funding. We realize that seeking funding can be a time-consuming and frustrating process, and we regret that we are able to fund only a small percentage of the requests that we receive. The Foundation Center might be able to help you identify potential funders. It offers a comprehensive database of U.S. grantmakers and the criteria for their grants. We wish you success in securing funding and in the future success of your endeavors.

Our grantmaking process

The Kauffman Foundation does not have proposal deadlines or established maximum and minimum dollar amounts. Grant amounts vary depending on the scope of the specific project and the size of the organization. We regularly review our grant application process and streamline our internal review procedures to be more timely and responsive to your funding requests. Active grantees are required to provide regular progress reports on project activities and outcomes.

We are open to new ideas and innovative projects. Please keep in mind, although your project may appear to fall under our grant guidelines, funding for unsolicited requests is very limited. While not affiliated with the Kauffman Foundation, our list of Other Grantseeker Resources for individuals and organizations may provide additional guidance and options for funding of your project.

request for proposals (RFPs)

Requests for proposals (RFPs) may be issued to invite qualified organizations who meet specialized criteria for a grant. Within a structured set of terms and conditions, each RFP features distinct requirements for a limited time with specific deadlines. The competitive process is designed to identify and advance uncommon approaches to support social progress and well-being. Visit our RFP Portal for more information.
