Kansas City to Celebrate the Art of the Startup During 1Week KC, May 29-June 5

Week to include food trucks and updates from past 1 Million Cups presenters

KANSAS CITY, Mo. May 20, 2015) — Kansas City’s annual summer celebration of entrepreneurship is being held May 29–June 5. The week will provide education and inspiration to Kansas Citians interested in starting their own business, and add to the festivities with food, fun and baseball.

“1Week KC is a great way to celebrate entrepreneurship in Kansas City and acknowledge how far we’ve come,” said Nathan Kurtz, a senior program officer in entrepreneurship at the Kauffman Foundation. “Our city is an entrepreneurial leader, not only because of its history of great startup companies, but also because of its success developing the infrastructure that helps entrepreneurs succeed.”

In its fourth year, 1Week KC kicks off the opening weekend with a new event, Rookie Lunch, which will provide information and direction to anyone experiencing the week for the first time. Startup Weekend, an energizing 48 hours in which teams take an idea through its startup phases, also heads up the opening weekend.

The week’s other highlights include EDay at the K, where the entrepreneurial community can learn and network while watching the American League Champion Kansas City Royals. Along with a ticket to the game, entrepreneurs will participate in a pregame presentation by entrepreneurial  “all-stars” sharing their insights and lessons learned.

On Wednesday, June 3, 1 Million Cups will host a special “Where are they now?” edition that features entrepreneurs who are returning to share their successes and challenges of businesses they have previously presented.

Other 1Week KC events include Crowdfunding Live, a showcase of local companies that have current crowdfunding campaigns, and the KC Food Truck Face Off will close out the week on June 5.

“1Week KC gives us a chance to unite entrepreneurs and celebrate entrepreneurship,” Kurtz said. “We continue to develop our local community of entrepreneurs and support their work.”
