Launched in 2025, the Kauffman Uncommon Leader Awards are a portfolio of awards to recognize leaders in the Kansas City area who are making a lasting impact within their nonprofit organizations and the communities they serve. The awards include the Kauffman Uncommon Leader Impact Award and Visionary Award.

The Uncommon Leader Impact Award honors non-C-suite employees at 501(c)(3) public charities who drive meaningful impact through their work aligned with the Foundation’s mission to advance economic mobility and who demonstrate significant contributions to the Kansas City region’s well-being and growth. The Uncommon Leader Visionary Award is designed to recognize executive leaders from 501(c)(3) public charities in the Kansas City region who are building an inspiring and impactful legacy within their community. 

Introduced as part of the Foundation’s strategic refresh in 2024, the awards honor leaders whose work aligns with the Foundation’s mission and reflects Mr. Kauffman’s values of equity, innovation, and community impact. Dr. Rachel Melson, outreach clinic director, Swope Health Services, was named the inaugural Impact Awardee in 2025. Tysie McDowell, founding superintendent, Crossroads Charter Schools, Inc., was named the inaugural Visionary Awardee in 2026.
