Position Summary

This position is responsible for helping with the overall horticultural design, installation, display, and maintenance of the Kauffman Memorial Garden and designated areas of the Kauffman Foundation Legacy Park. The highest quality and execution should be focused on these various areas, providing the visitor with a premier display garden experience. The Horticulturist is a team member who works with the Lead Horticulturist and aids in teaching volunteers/interns the soundest gardening practices. This position is an outdoor/indoor position and applicants must be able to perform regular work under climatic conditions typical of Kansas City, Missouri.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in horticulture or a related field and two years’ experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of plant material, landscape maintenance techniques, and the ability to design and install garden beds.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with a diverse audience.
  • Must be able to safely lift 50 pounds and be capable of bending, squatting, stooping, and twisting many times a day.
  • COVID vaccinations are required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Horticulturist is a production-oriented position and performs all levels of landscape and grounds maintenance.
  • Understands and supports the original design intent of the garden and garden areas.
  • Initiative to take ownership of responsibilities, the ability to prioritize, and the knowledge and skills to act.
  • Identify and address the most relevant maintenance needs of our plant collection.
  • Manages annuals, perennials, shrubs, vines, and small trees for health and bloom quality.
  • Shares with the designing of annual beds.
  • Has an exceptional eye for detail and always maintains a commitment to excellence.
  • Applies water with the appropriate amount for a wide range of plant material.
  • Identifies plant fungus and pathogens and apply sound appropriate control.
  • Identifies a wide variety of horticultural weeds and insects and determine the best treatment.
  • Maintains basic record keeping.
  • Aids in plant labeling
  • Works with versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to handle constantly changing priorities.
  • Helps in maintaining all public areas to be safe and tidy daily.
  • Uses small gas-powered equipment such as weed eaters, tillers, blowers, and chainsaws.
  • Interacts with guests who visit the garden as well as via phone, e-mail, and social media.
  • Understands the guest perspective and works to support and enhance the guest experience.

Salary and Benefits

  • Salary of $40,000 – $45,000 per year.
  • Generous benefits package includes health insurance, dental, disability, life insurance, and retirement.
